JAKARTA, investor.id - On October 24, 2023, President Joko Widodo inaugurated the BNI Investor Daily Summit 2023 event which is one of the largest economic and investment forums in Indonesia. This annual event organized by BNI was also attended by the Indonesian Minister of Trade (Mendag) Enggartiasto Lukita, Indonesian Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani, President Director of B-Universe Rio Abdurachman, and President Director of BNI Royke Tumilaar.
With the theme "Sustainable Growth Global Challenges", BNI Investor Daily Summit 2023 invited SEVP BNI Ventures Gita Sjahrir as a speaker on one of the discussion topics entitled "Inflection Point: Mapping the Next Phase of Indonesia's Maturing Tech Industry". Interestingly, this session discusses the ongoing challenges and opportunities to drive the digitization of the Indonesian economy.
As an ex-Serial Tech Preneur who is now an active investor at BNI Ventures, Gita shared her views on the development of the digital industry in Indonesia which is still not maturing and is often compared to developed countries such as America.
"The tech industry in Indonesia is still a baby when compared to countries that have developed their digital ecosystems since the 1970s. Maybe if you want to compare it, it can be with Latin-American countries or the African continent which are just as new. Due to its relatively new age, the digital ecosystem in Indonesia has a wide scope of exploration and great potential to grow without having to equate it with Silicon Valley, for example by building tech-startups with the implementation of local wisdom in it to solve an issue," explained Gita.
According to him, BNI Ventures as one of the corporate venture capital can also encourage the acceleration of digitalization through synergy and investment in local startups engaged in the fintech sector. Currently, Indonesia is still recovering from the Tech Winter caused by geopolitical tensions. But with the end of the Covid-19 pandemic, the tech industry began to welcome spring, where the increase in funding rounds in Indonesia in Q3, 2023 jumped about 353 percent from Q2, 2023. From this data, it can be concluded that the growth of the startup ecosystem in the technology sector (fintech) is very high with the support of investors.
"Digital growth is the result of experimentation. Which means that in Indonesia itself digital iteration and re-iteration is important, so that from the existing failure base, with experiments one day will find success itself. It is necessary to emphasize the importance of understanding between the two parties, Startup Founders and Investors so that both can exit, because the fundamental of business is profit," he said.
